I am a strong believer in becoming involved in the community in which I teach, and so I try to do so at every opportunity. Below are a few examples of how I have become involved in Nipmuc's community:
Baseball
During my time at Nipmuc High School I assisted in coaching the JV baseball team. I led practices and coached during every game, traveling with the team to compete. I would like to become involved in the baseball program in the future.
Basketball
I worked the shot clock and scoreboard for the home games of the boys and girls basketball games at Nipmuc. Having played both baseball and basketball in high school, I would like to continue my involvement in both of these programs in another district.
New York
I chaperoned a day trip to New York City with a group of about one hundred students. We traveled by bus and visited both Liberty and Ellis Island. This was a great experience because it allowed for relationship-building with both colleagues and students, while everyone learned something new.
Washington D.C.
I also chaperoned a week-long trip to Washington D.C. with about one hundred and fifty students. I was responsible for twelve students while we toured the city, dined in restaurants, and followed our itinerary. This was an amazing experience which was full of fun and inquiry, and allowed me to take on the responsibility of chaperoning students in the nation's capital.
Smash Club
I ran an after-school video game club with a large population of students from the Social Skills Program. The club derived its name from the Super Smash Bros. video game. This was a great atmosphere for these students to socialize concerning a shared interest. I oversaw gaming competitions and welcomed many students who had not previously shown interest. I promoted the club during the school's Wellness Week, which had students rotate around various activities promoting health and wellness.
